Appraisal Checklist

A certified appraisal provides a basis for insurance claims and scheduling, divorce and bankruptcy negotiations, IRS taxable charitable donation, estate planning and asset assessment, purchase or sale advisory, and/or equitable distribution of assets among heirs. All appraisals have one specified intended use and one specified set of users. All appraisals completed by RJ Corey & Associates conform to the American Society of Appraiser's (ASA) Principles of Appraisal Practice and Code of Ethics and, the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) of The Appraisal Foundation.

CHECKLIST: By following these preparation instructions, you will save both time and money in the completion of your scheduled appraisal.

  • Contact your insurance representative to review your policy and coverage limitations. Not all policies are the same. Ask your agent to review your coverage with you.
  • Choose an on site inspection time when distractions will be minimized, and the focus can be on the appraisal. Keep the number of people involved to a minimum to avoid interruptions and confusion.
  • Decide which items are going to be appraised. Make a list of items to be appraised.
  • Have a work area (counter top or table) available for the appraiser's computer, scanner, camera, etc.
  • Have someone available to assist the appraiser with a helping hand, e.g., holding items being photographed, removing pictures from the wall, etc.
  • Have all items unlocked and available for inspection. Empty all desk and dresser drawers so they can be removed for inspection.
  • Pull large furniture away from the wall so both the front and back can be viewed and photographed.
  • Unpack boxes and storage cases ahead of time. Do not forget the attic, garage, and closet shelves.
  • Separate sets of silver, china and stemware into their respective patterns. If you know the name of the manufacturer or pattern, share that information with the appraiser.
  • Low cost items can sometimes be appraised in groups. Group small items of like kind together, e.g., pottery or nick-knacks, etc.
  • Gather documentation, e.g., proof of ownership, sales receipts, past appraisals, etc. so they can be scanned for inclusion in the final report.
